National Adoption Day celebration in SJC Superior Court

<span style="font-size: 20pt; font-family: "Baskerville Old Face","serif";">San
Juan-area children to join new families during

<span style="font-size: 20pt; font-family: "Baskerville Old Face","serif";">rare
adoption celebration in superior court

As
many as four children from the San Juan area will join new families on Friday,
Nov. 20 as the San Juan County Superior Court celebrates its first National
Adoption Day, and invites the media and public to join in the event.

Although
adoption hearings are generally closed, the National Adoption Day celebration
offers a rare opportunity for the public and media to witness new families
being formed, share in the experience and learn more about adoption of foster
children.

“It
is a joy to have these children find the safety and warmth of loving, forever
families,” said Denise Revels Robinson, Assistant Secretary of the DSHS
Children’s Administration. “For the children and their new
families, this is a day they will never forget.”

The
event is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the San Juan County Superior Court, 350
Court St., No. 7, in Friday Harbor. The celebration will include as many as
four adoptions, activities for the children, refreshments, speakers, and
information on adoption. “With all of the support and interest we have
had, this promises to be the first of many National Adoption Day
celebrations,” said San Juan County Superior Court Presiding Judge John
Linde, who spearheaded planning for the event.

            More than 175
children are scheduled to be adopted during special events in nearly 20
Washington courts this month as the state marks its fifth statewide National
Adoption Day celebration.

            In addition to
celebrating foster adoptions during National Adoption Day, the Children’s
Administration announced that a record number of Washington foster children
were adopted into new families in Fiscal Year 2009 (July 2008 through June
2009). While normally about 1,100 – 1,200 foster children are adopted
each year (with 1,177 adopted in FY 2008), in FY 2009 there were 1,701
Washington foster children adopted into new families.

            As of January 1,
2009, there were 9,546 children living in foster care in Washington, with more
than 1,750 of those available for adoption — meaning the courts had
permanently terminated their biological parents’ rights to raise them.

            Washington courts
and DSHS offices began celebrating National Adoption Day in 2005 when it was first
sponsored by the Washington State Supreme Court Commission on Children in
Foster Care. The event continues to grow into more courts and communities each
year. Nationally, NAD was founded in 2000 by a coalition of child welfare
agencies and businesses to raise awareness of the many thousands of foster
children in the U.S. available for adoption and waiting for new families.

The SJCT Family Theatre’s fall production transforms the Whittier stage
into a colorful land of discovery and adventure on Friday evening and
Saturday afternoon, November 20 and 21.

Written by Shaw Island storyteller and director Tifni Twitchell Lynch, The Merry Firebird,
brings together more than 25 elementary school children and 10 parents
in a magical story that helps us think in new ways about endangered
species.

Unlike in the darker firebird myth, this bird represents more
joy and light, as the Firebird leads two children in an exciting
adventure. “I wanted the Firebird to represent something important in
the world,” said Tifni.

The play centers on two children encouraged by the Firebird to gather
animal support against a very greedy, scallywag ruler who is stealing
the Golden Apples that sustain all the world’s animals.

During the
inspiring journey, they encounter new friends such as an extinct
dragon, gypsies, an orca, a polar bear and a group of puppeteers--all
eager to help.

PLUS! Free art and theatre workshops for K-3 graders!

Book Signing by Rod Kulbach Baja Dreaming: Stories from Another Time

BOOK-SIGNING by ROD KULBACH BAJA DREAMING:
STORIES FROM ANOTHER TIME

2 to 4 p.m. Griffin Bay Bookstore
155 Spring St. Friday Harbor.

"Share Baja memories, tall tales travels by land or sea." Join Mike, who
lived for years in his 6x8-foot house on the beach. Meet a benevolent Mexican
port captain, and a generous fuel king in Turtle Bay.

There's boat building on the beach, a gale on a crossing, and a tale of incompatibility at sea. There is
heartbreak, too, and good fortune – and musings on why so many of us are drawn
to this desert land by the sea.

Old Baja buffs might look back and smile while reading these stories from
another time, but newcomers to Baja will still find much as Rod describes it:
the vastness of mountains and desert, the blues and pale greens of the Sea, the
fish and sea birds going about their business, and the cast of characters who
make this their home.

Rod's life has been mostly about boats: building, sailing, and designing. He
holds a 50-ton masters ticket and has been a sailing instructor for 15 years.
Between 1970 through 2007, he spent years in Baja. Rod began writing travel
pieces, short stories, and poetry in 1970; some of his work has been published
by SAIL and CRUISING WORLD. He lives in Friday Harbor.

More information at www.rodkulbach.com
